The three roles often hidden in one box

A cable modem translates the provider’s cable signal into a network connection. Fiber service commonly uses an optical network terminal. A router connects the home network to that provider connection, assigns local addresses, enforces network rules, and sends traffic to the correct path. A wireless access point provides Wi-Fi. Ethernet switches add wired ports.

Match symptoms to the likely layer

If every device loses internet—including a computer connected by Ethernet—the provider line, modem or terminal, router, or outage may be involved. If Ethernet is healthy but one room is weak, investigate Wi-Fi placement and use the mesh versus extender comparison. If one application or device is affected, replacing the network may be premature.

Record indicator lights and provider outage status before rebooting. Use approved power and reset procedures. A factory reset can erase network names, passwords, forwarding, parental controls, phone configuration, and other settings, so do it only with the information needed to recover.

A modem approved for one provider or tier is not necessarily suitable for another, and firmware may remain provider-controlled even when the hardware is owned.

Secure the network administrator

Change default administrator credentials, apply updates, disable unneeded remote administration and legacy features, and use modern Wi-Fi protection supported by the clients. Put untrusted connected devices on an appropriate separate network when practical. Protect the management account with strong authentication and record recovery information securely.

Do not confuse local and internet speed

A fast Wi-Fi link can still reach a slow provider connection, and a fast plan can still perform poorly over distant Wi-Fi. Local transfers, media servers, and backups may benefit from faster wired or wireless networking even if the internet tier stays the same.
