A kitchen scale should be chosen for the foods, containers and measurement steps you actually use. Maximum capacity is only one specification. A bowl can hide a display, a long pause can erase a reading and an easily pressed unit button can leave you following a gram-based recipe with the wrong units showing.

Begin with three ordinary weighing tasks

For a heavy bowl, the scale needs capacity for both bowl and contents even when the display has been zeroed to show the food separately. Tare changes what is displayed; it does not make the physical load disappear. Confirm the manufacturer's total-load limit and overload warning.

Understand tare as a sequence

Tare or zero functions allow the display to subtract a container or reset before adding another ingredient. Read how the exact product behaves when an item is removed, when the device enters standby and when it turns off completely.

Decide whether a connected scale is useful

A connected model may promise automatic food logging or recipe guidance. Verify how a food is identified, whether the database entry matches the food in front of you and what the scale measures versus what the app estimates.

Ask what works without a phone, account or subscription. A scale should not be assumed to retain its advertised logging function after a free trial ends. Compare the complete ownership cost and export options if maintaining a record is the main purpose.
